Curiosity entices Olivia/Ariel to get closer to her parents neighbors and friends and try to piece together the truth about what happened to her parents all those years ago. Now an emancipated minor and assured the police have reopened the case, Olivia feels the need to return to her hometown of Medford. A killer that might still be interested in where little Ariel Benson is today. What is even more horrifying is that Olivia realizes that it was her parent's killer that took her away from the scene of the crime that day. Startled, she soon learns that her father died- fourteen years ago, probably on the same day as her mother. Olivia assumes that they've come to tell her, that her father, long suspected of killing her mother, has finally been placed in police custody. The story opens with 17 year-old Olivia Reinhart( once known as Ariel Benson), receiving a surprise visit from two police detectives. Once I began reading, it only took a few pages for me to get hooked on this suspenseful mystery. In the beginning it was the eye-catching cover and title that drew me in. This is my first April Henry book and I'm fairly certain that it will not be my last.

Rowling's classic Harry Potter series take you back to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. I don’t think I was old enough or experienced enough to understand the absurdity of the entire situation as he moves through his days, unconcerned by major life decisions. I remember reading The Stranger for the first time and being surprised by Meursault’s bluntness. There’s the death of his mother, but he also experiences violence, what should’ve been, or could’ve been, love, happiness, and grief, all alongside freedom and imprisonment. We encounter him as he deals with some of life’s major changes and curveballs. He goes on a condensed journey through The Stranger. Who is this person that speaks so frivolously about the death of their own mother? What is the rest of their life like? It is this line that draws you in and makes you want to know more. Camus’ opening line, declaring from the first-person perspective that the speaker isn’t sure whether or not his mother died today or yesterday, is quite memorable. The story opens with Meursault receiving the news that his mother, who he put into an old age home, has died. Yet her life is not her own- from birth, her life is her father’s and through marriage, her life is her husband’s. One who is experiencing her first love, full of hope and ambition for her own life. Of all the possible protagonists, such as the passionate communist or the wayward rich son or an influential figure, the novel chooses a rich, rebellious, and reckless teenager: Leiyin. For me, this novel explored womanhood in China back in the days. A really strong debut, I would definitely read her next book. It may seem like a slow paced story, but it was so gripping, I was kept at the edge of my side the whole time and finished the book in two sittings. I loved the writing, the setting, the descriptions of the manors, the characters, the character dynamic, and the family. Leiyin is from a rich patriarchal family who has firm Nationalist roots. The book is set China during the chaotic clash between the Nationalist and the Communist. Too long in the mortal world as a ghost, and she might become a hungry ghost, stripped of her humanity and cursed to wander aimlessly in the mortal world. She learns that she has to atone for something she had done in her lifetime in order to enter afterlife. When Leiyin dies, her ghost and her three souls, yin, yang, hun were unable to proceed to afterlife. “Someone is giving you e-mails that I wrote,” Wolff said. Smerconish insisted that he read the book and merely had questions as a reader. “But you are now doing the job of the White House, just so everybody knows that,” Wolff continued. By the way, a totally incompetent attack, which so far has found a few typos and turned this book into the best-selling book in the world. I was lucky in that sense that I learned that rejection has nothing to do with whether a book will make it or not, or whether it will connect with readers. But because I had so many requests for a paperback from online readers, I eventually self published, and the books shot up the charts - and after that were picked up by Penguin, where the series went on to become a USA Today bestseller. Over the course of Stella’s road trip, she thinks back on her life, and we see her story from when she moved to Texas as a passionate young music lover who is just starting out in her career, desperate to experience all the music that Austin has to offer, and become a music journalist. I’m admitting upfront that I was slightly terrified diving into this book because I knew it was an angsty love triangle story, and I usually avoid those. It’s such an incredible read, and I absolutely loved it! Her writing is flawless, her characters are unforgettable, and her story is captivating and masterfully told. I finished this book yesterday and I am still a jumble of emotions and I can’t stop thinking about it! Kate Stewart completely owned me with this book.
